Keeping Mexico Safe

Keeping Mexico safe must be the reason we were stopped TWICE crossing in this year.  The Americans were the first to stop us and make sure we were not bringing any drugs or illegals into Mexico.  The Mexicans actually had us empty the back of the truck to make sure we were not smuggling anything in.  Really!  What kind of backwards thinking is that?!?  And that was only the beginning of the hoops we had to jump through.  Eight stops in all.  We were searched twice and bribed our way out once.  We had to explain Ceremonial Cornmeal and Tarot cards – then were handed Mormon (or Jehovah Witness) literature.  It was pretty surprising – the first time in 12 years we were so picked on.

Another first for us was driving through rain to get here.  Unbeknownst to us, there was a hurricane lurking in the Pacific.  We got to Mazatlan, unloaded the front of the bus so we could start putting things away and got hit with a fierce rain storm.  Our E-Z UP canopy really is easy to put up as it turns out.  And quick too!  Today is day three of being back and we are finally dried out and settled in.

Hal spent the early part of the day remaking our front door which had started to rot after 4 years of being in this climate.  Power tools were in operation and tomorrow the outdoor kitchen redo will begin.  Today also saw the beginning of the garden (all from plants that in spite of the 8 checkpoints were successfully smuggled into the country).

We are lucky to have a pool this year so when we need to cool off, in we go.  Really a nice addition to the park.  We’ve been in every day, a couple of times a day.  I love it.

We are starting to reconnect with our little community – had our first coffee at the Looney Bean yesterday.  We even went to a drumming/chanting circle late in the afternoon.

If I had to pick a theme for the time since we left it would have to be a split between the federales and baseball.  We have been able to keep up in bars, restaurants, computers….  Everywhere we can.  It has been a fun series (well, more fun for Hélène, the Tigers fan).

Our first neighbor arrived this afternoon.  With 150 spaces in the park, they chose to park 2 spaces away from us.  Go figure.  They actually moved back a couple more spaces after we let them know they were blocking our internet.  Welcome to the neighborhood….

There is a sweet little iguana that lives in our vicinity (and does NOT bother our internet).  He is a bit shy, but we are hoping for a photo soon.

It is good to be back.  It is hot and steamy and we are always sweaty.  And we are loving it.

From San Carlos

Well, we loaded the truck to the gills on Wednesday and headed out to Truth or Consequences. Then, two days on the beach in Puerto Penasco. Today, we reached San Carlos. Been following the baseball playoffs at some of our favorite cantinas. Notice the dolphins that visited us and the beautiful sunset and moonrise. We're both nursing slight sunburns from the joy of being on a hot beach.

We're a week away from heading south. Who knows what awaits us on the road and in Mazatlan this winter.

Saturday, April 7, 2012

We are enjoying our last week in Mazatlan.  These last few photos capture some of our favorite things to do - like riding the ferry to Stone Island - we celebrated my birthday with our friends (notice the beautiful flowers I'm holding in some of the photos.
And it is so good to have Hal (the family photographer!) in some photos.

Here we are at the Temazcal with our friend Ismael.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) increases the population of Mazatlan by thousands and thousands.  Here are some shots of our usually empty beach.  Driving downtown is impossible - we choose to stay close to home.

This is the newest addition to Las Jaibas RV Park.  He was waiting when we returned from our walk to the beach to watch the sunset.

Recent Photos

Well, we know we haven't kept up with this blog as well as in past years but we have a good excuse this year. (Helene's surgery, remember?) But here is an assortment of photos from recent classes and events that we've participated in.

Third Annual Las Jaibas Chili Cookoff

Saturday was the big Chili Cookoff here that benefits one of the orphans' homes in town. It was a huge success. The chili ran out in less than an hour, instead of the two hours alloted for voting. Northie's was the best but, once again, she did not win. Que lastima.

We had fun, Hal ate a lot of good chili, and the orphans won.

Tamales

Our First Tamale

Another fun Mazatlan experience – this one started on Twelfth Night (or Epiphany) which we celebrated here at the bus with our Mazatlan family.  Our friend Ismael baked an awesome bread with little figures baked into it.  If you got a piece that had one of these little guys in it, you had to make Tamales for the gang on Feb. 2 (Candelaria).  Of course, Hal got one of them.  Sooooooooo………
Yesterday, we both worked our little heinies off and made 17 beautiful, tasty tamales.  And we were the ONLY ones at the gathering that actually made them from scratch.  The other tamales we ate were ordered ahead of time.  We had a fun meal with our friends.  Making the tamales was one of my favorite parts of the week.  Yummmmm…
